Surrey Fire & Rescue delivers services to ensure our communities are safer, whether it be preventing and protecting people from fire and other risks or responding swiftly and effectively to the emergencies that occur. The role reports to the Performance & Intelligence Specialist within the Data & Digital Team.
The Data, Digital & Specialist Projects Team is responsible for the Service’s core data analysis and reports, both of which are used in support of service delivery and improvement. it also leads on the Digital Strategy and related IT projects and data governance; there are around a dozen people in the Team.
This Team had a lead role in modelling the response incident data that has enabled a significant shift of the workforce from this activity into community protection and prevention activities. The Team also continues to be key to enabling the Mobilising Control function of the Service to enlarge its scope to cover other fire and rescue services.

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service provide an emergency service that looks after approximately 1.18 million people spread across approximately 1,676 square kilometres in a county that includes several large urban areas such as Guildford, Redhill, and Woking. Surrey has also been found to have the highest concentration of trees in the UK. There are 103 kilometres of motorway, two major airports nearby and there are more than 1000 sites identified as posing high risk throughout the county.
Surrey's firefighters are trained to deal with a range of emergency situations, not just fires and road traffic collisions. These activities include working with other agencies to respond to widespread flooding and other water rescue incidents or dealing with emergencies that may involve hazardous materials.

About the role
The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Data Analyst role is to process and analyse all required Service performance data such as operational response data, community fire safety work streams data through to sickness and absence data. You will analyse and present this information to a high level of quality and to a level of detail and in a format as required by the customer.
This role also takes the lead in maintaining and developing GIS mapping and data analysis systems for the service as required by the customer.
A further key element for this post is to support the maintenance and development of sector specialist databases and platforms supporting critical systems that cover diverse elements of the service needs around incidents, community safety activities and management of the workforce.
To apply and be considered for this position your application will clearly evidence:
- Knowledge of GIS mapping, such as Mapinfo or equivalent software.
- Knowledge of data analysis systems.
- Experience of undertaking data analysis and reporting against the results with accuracy, clarity and insight.
- Training and experience in using SQL Server Management Studio
- GIS experience and excellent data analysis skills within MS Excel. MS Excel skills to include use of VBA.
- Knowledge of FME for the automation of data preparation.
