Job Introduction

Data to Insight is a national collaborative service led by local authorities with staff hosted by East Sussex County Council. Our mission is to help local authorities make better use of children’s services data, and we do this by:

  • developing and maintaining shared analysis tools
  • helping best practice spread across local and regional boundaries
  • convening partnerships to deliver specific collaborative data projects
  • enabling learning to build skills and capacity for excellent data work

The Data Manager role is a new post created with funding from the Department for Education. We are looking for a competent data manager who can work with a broad range of stakeholders on a high-profile one-year project to explore and develop new standard approaches to collecting and reporting children’s safeguarding data. Duties will split between delivering this project and supporting Data to Insight’s core activities.

This is an amazing opportunity to gain experience of data practice across a wide range of local contexts, and to inform and influence national policy around children’s services data work.

The role will combine collaboration management with hands-on data management, analysis and data design, as well as some line management and budgetary responsibility. With a significant proportion of the role focused on our Standard Safeguarding Dataset project, there will also be a requirement to support the wider Data to Insight community and toolkit, including maintaining data tools, supporting community members, and contributing to Data to Insight’s core programme management work.

While an understanding of children’s services data and the specific technologies we use will be a great help, we are less interested in the specific knowledge you already have than in your ability to thrive in our flexible and collaborative working environment. We will work as a team, playing to each member’s strengths and personal development goals where possible. We believe wholeheartedly in Data to Insight’s capacity to improve data work in children’s services, helping local authorities help each other to improve, and will seek to embody this philosophy in all our work.

The role is initially funded for 12-15 months and may appeal therefore to an individual already working within any LA children’s services department either as a secondment opportunity or as a new post. Equally we would be pleased to consider applicants with experience from other LA departments, the third and commercial sectors.

As a predominantly home-based role, we encourage applicants regardless of their location within the UK but note that the role may require attending meetings and events in other regions. The normal work base could also be from one of several office locations within the country – subject to agreement with the hiring manager who is based in Lewes in East Sussex. We will also consider applications for part time or flexible working. Please make clear in your application if you are applying on this basis.

We offer a diverse range of benefits to help and support you during your employment. More information can be found on our benefits page.

To apply for this role please follow the ‘Apply Now’ button above. When completing your application be sure to address how you meet the criteria as advertised drawing on any relevant work/life experience, education or personal interests.

Interviews will take place via online meeting using Microsoft Teams, on a date to be confirmed.

Additional Information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.

Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.

Due to the restrictions we cannot guarantee that individuals that meet the requirements of the Points-based Immigration System will be issued with clearance to obtain work permits.

If you require any reasonable adjustments, due to disability, to enable you to participate fully in the process please contact the hiring manager on the contact details above.

Reasonable adjustments include things like an offline application form. If you would like to discuss your requirements further, please get in touch.
